Happy Birthday, Honest Abe

Yep, on this day in 1809 The Great Emancipator was born. In Kentucky. A lot of people think he was born in Illinois because Illinois calls itself The Land of Lincoln. True, he did live and work there and ran for office there, but it wasn't his birthplace. I had the satisfaction of correcting my history teacher in college on that point.

Too bad old Abe got robbed of his holiday. President's Day feels sort of slimy, because we also have to acknowledge the birthing of such folk as Tricky Dick.

Yes, I always feel a bit strange on the 12th. Such a big deal when we were kids.

I agree, Evan, and would cite Slick Willy as an even more egregious example. Plus, as school kids we got Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays off ten days apart--assuming they didn't fall on weekends.

I'm old enough to remember getting Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays off. Since the weather was bitterly cold and snowy back then, we were all glad to have a couple of days off. But now, with Global Warming, getting the reinvented PRESIDENTS' DAY off just gives us a three-day weekend.
